Eumundi School of Rock was founded by QLD's own five-time ARIA award-winning artist, Katie Noonan, her husband, Jazz saxophonist, Zac Hurren and members of Sunshine Coast Surf/Rock band, Band of Frequencies. Now in it's 5th year, Eumundi School of Rock is growing in popularity and is bigger and better than ever!
Eumundi School of Rock is an audition based 10 week music mentoring and tuition scholarship program for Sunshine Coast based students from grades 3 to 8, that includes a live end of year concert with full professional band production.
In 2016, a small group of Sunshine Coast musicians spearheaded by award winning Australian singer/songwriter Katie Noonan and members of Band of Frequencies came up with the plan to create a rock music school in Eumundi. In it's inaugural year the program received warm community support from; ECCO, Experience Eumundi, Eumundi State School and other local feeder schools – North Arm, Noosa Pengari Steiner School and Noosa Junior High. The Eumundi School of Rock also received much needed Regional Arts Development Funds to go towards paying for the tuition and fees involved with teaching 20 young musicians.
The ethos behind starting the school was to ignite a passion and love of music performance in the children who were already playing music by giving them mentoring, stage craft lessons and a live gig experience. They also have the opportunity to work together in bands with other students and experience creating high quality music together.
The 10 week program consists of 5 one on one lessons with their individual teachers learning a set list of all Australian songs. The remaining 5 lessons see the students combine into bands and work on the songs together under the direction of the musical director, with each teacher supporting their students through the process. Learning Australian songs is important to founder Katie Noonan who is passionate about supporting homegrown talent and growing the local music scene from a very early age.
Over the four years since Eumundi School of Rock began, a total of 60 Sunshine Coast students have completed the scholarship program and concert successfully. The buzz and reviews from parents have been very encouraging and some students have gone on to re-audition and partake in the scholarship program for a second year. The effect our music program has had on the participating children and the broader regional community of the Sunshine Coast has been incredible - with many great reviews from both parents and audience members. Many more businesses are coming on board to support the program and the team look forward to continuing to grow and nurture the talent of Sunshine Coast's newest gigging musicians for many years to come.
"My family and I have been involved in the school of rock for the last two years. In 2018 my youngest daughter was lucky enough to receive a Eumundi School of Rock Scholarship. These amazing tutors and mentors have inspired my daughter so much. Within the 10 weeks her confidence and abilities grew, blowing my mind to see my quiet, little, shy girl to have the confidence to get on stage, not only perform but entertain the crowd of 200 plus people. The end of year concert was phenomenal.
Her enthusiasm has overflowed into our family and her group of friends who all tried out this year.
A few years ago my eldest daughter entered a singing competition but due to technical difficulties she was left hanging on stage which destroyed her confidence in performing or singing ever again.
She even stopped singing around the house. After now being accepted in Eumundi School of Rock for 2019 she has started singing again. It is just so wonderful to be a part of this program and to have music back in our house."
"We’ve been so lucky to have 2 of our kids experience the SOR phenomena. The school of rock has been a springboard to raising children’s confidence in music performance. Our kids already had a love for music, but they lacked confidence in performing in front of a crowd. The SOR experience was a catalyst to our kids being awarded music scholarships at Sunshine Coast Grammar School. Since the SOR they are now composing their own works and are regular buskers at the Eumundi Markets.
Our family are extremely grateful to Katie Noonan for her vision and the SOR community of volunteers and staff. Together they are creating transformative music opportunities for kids. The SOR program is reflective of our community’s creative values and gives kids the lifelong joy of musicality. Thanks to SOR, a community of kids have found their rock mojo!"
"As a parent who has now had two children participate in this fantastic program I can not express what a fantastic opportunity this has been for them. They were allowed to experience and participate in a range of activities from lessons with seasoned performers, TV and radio interviews right through to the big finale of performing in a real Rock Concert! Both the girls loved every minute!"
